Shadow

Looked up the hill

Blazing sun high up in the sky

I took a step ahead

Found a companion following mine

One day at a time,

I climbed the steep ledge

On a never ending winding road

My companion following my every step

A shadow to my being self

I smelled the flowers

Danced with squirrels, rabbits, deers and every fawna serene

Sang with butterflies

Rested in meadow greens

My friends abandoned me in the desert of time

I kept on walking

Scared to the bones, shivering, stumbling

Sweating to the core

Out came the night

Bringing along a raging storm

I kept climbing this mountain

Fighting my way through a whirlpool form

Thunder rumbled my ears

I fell to the ground

Saw my companion beside me

In the flicker of lightning

That split across the sky

I walked through

My shoulders heavy with weight

Shadow has been my friend

Since the beginning of time

Soon the darkness gave way to light

I looked back and saw I left the weight behind

It was a long, winding journey

I thought to myself, self love doesn't come naturally to me

Whispered the shadow from behind

I already love you enough

You can borrow some of mine.

I never found good words to say

How grateful I am for that (college) first day,

This anastrophe of words is a message to send,

My constant companion, my support

We have been through too much together

Who says you can't have a soulmate in your best friend.
